Population

Scarborough is now technically part of the eastern portion of the city of Toronto, however its name has been retained by most local residents and is still recognized by Canada Post. Scarborough’s population is around 593,297 with an annual growth rate of about 6%. If this trend continues, Scarborough will likely be the most populated area of Toronto by 2010.

Culture

Culturally diverse, over 50% of Scarborough residents were born in another country, with Chinese, South Asian and African Americans making up the largest groups of New Canadians. The result is a vibrant cultural community including a unique Chinese area in the Agincourt district that features many restaurants and shops. A number of famous Canadians have called Scarborough home, including Mike Myers, Eric McCormack, John Candy and the Barenaked Ladies. The Scarborough Town Centre offers excellent shopping, and is the 8th largest mall in Canada and the 4th largest in the GTA. But perhaps one of the biggest attractions in Scarborough is the Toronto Zoo. With over 5,000 animals representing some 500 species, the Toronto Zoo is not to be missed. It attracts an average of 1.3 million visitors a year and is perhaps one of the largest tourist draws to the Scarborough and Toronto area.

Standard of Living

Scarborough is home to both the Rouge River and the Scarborough Bluffs, with beautiful wooded and treed areas and title to the leafiest area of the GTA. The Rouge River provides a beautiful backdrop for many environmentalists and is also where many movies are shot. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and foxes. While there has been concern due to certain media reports about crime in the city, Scarborough is actually very safe. According to the Toronto Police Chief, the 42nd Division (located in Scarborough) is the safest in all of Toronto. The increased safety and quality of life makes Scarborough a great place to live.

Education

Schools in Scarborough are now part of the Toronto District School Board. Scarborough is also home to the first community college in Ontario, Centennial College. The college has 3 campuses throughout Scarborough and an enrollment of 12,000 full-time and 28,000 part-time students. Scarborough also has a campus that is part of the University of Toronto, and the Scarborough location has an enrollment of 10,000 students.

Health Care

Scarborough is home to The Scarborough Hospital, which is Canada’s largest urban community hospital. It has approximately 3, 700 staff members including some 700 physicians and 800 volunteers. With a 600 bed capacity and state of the art medical care, residents of Scarborough can rest easily knowing that they are well cared for. Moreover, The Scarborough Hospital offers some very unique initiatives, including the ‘Til I Sleep Program’ which allows pediatric surgery patients to have a parent with them until anesthesia takes effect, and a family birth centre recognized across North America. Since Scarborough is also part of Toronto, there are a multitude of additional health care facilities that are easily accessible to Scarborough residents.
