Population

Located between Lake Simcoe and Toronto in South Central Ontario, York Region is a regional municipality with a population of about 892,712. York Region is comprised of 9 towns including Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville and is the fastest growing census division in Canada, with experts expecting it to surpass 1.5 million people by 2031.

Culture

York Region is also one of the most culturally diverse areas in Canada. Approximately 13.9% of the population is Chinese while 6.5% is South Asian. York Region is home to an array of extensive and protected conservation areas such as Milne Park, where people can go to experience beautiful treed areas and wildlife in a protected and well maintained environment. And for those more interested in shopping adventures, there are plenty of venues (indoor and outdoor) that one can explore including Markville Shopping Centre, The Promenade Shopping Centre and Main Street Unionville, where old fashioned streets and quaint restaurants make one feel as though they’ve stepped back in time.

Education

York Region has its own school board, the York Region District School Board, which operates 180 schools and the York Catholic District School Board, which operates 95 schools. Seneca College has three campuses in York Region, and York University is located just outside the borders of the region.

Health Care

York Region has an extensive health care system, including three hospitals and many long term care facilities and community programs. Residents of York Region are also still within close proximity to some of the larger and more state of the art health care facilities offered in downtown Toronto. However, the choices for hospitals within York Region are excellent and include the Markham-Stouffville Hospital, Southlake Regional Health Centre and the York Central Hospital.

Buying a Home in York Region

York Region is a good place to buy a home and is currently outperforming Toronto in terms of real estate sales. Housing prices vary widely, with Whitchurch-Stouffville having the highest average housing price at $631,075 and Markham having the lowest at $452,646. Richmond Hill tends to be the busiest area for condominium sales with an average price of about $225,000.
